Many people are familiar with the cartoon image of the Shriner carrying the little girl and her crutches. What most do not realize is that the cartoon is based on an actual photo taken in 1970. The photograph is of Shriner, Al Hortman, carrying a girl named Bobbi Jo Wright. The older girl in the photo is Hortman’s daughter, Laura, who was a patient at the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. It was after Laura began receiving treatments at the Shriners Hospitals for Children that Al Hortman joined the Shrine.

The photo known as the “Editorial Without Words” is probably one of the best recognized symbols of Shriners Hospitals, yet it was taken almost by accident. Randy Dieter, the photographer, recalled that in 1970, he had been on assignment covering Hadi Temple’s annual outing for handicapped children at the now-defunct Mesker Amusement Park in Evansville, Indiana.

“I was taking shots of the midway and was using my telephoto lens,” Dieter said. “I saw a local Shriner walking by carrying a little girl in one hand and her crutches in the other. My camera wouldn’t fire. Then they were too close for my lens. I ran past them, but the camera jammed. I had to take my last shot as they walked by. It was the end of the roll. If I had to think about it, I wouldn’t have come up with something like that. Fate guides you.”

“It still seems unreal,” said Bobbi Jo Wright, the little girl in the photo. “I have many wonderful memories of the years I was a patient at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and remember all the fun activities. I was born with cerebral palsy, which resulted in many orthopedic problems that made walking difficult. I had many surgeries at the St. Louis Hospital. They greatly improved my ability to walk.”

Bobbi Jo received her B.A. in English from Anderson University. She is active in her church and teaches Sunday School. “I use a cane when I go shopping,” she said. “If I’m walking on grassy areas, I use crutches.”

Today, the famous photo is an integral part of the Shriners Hospitals logo, and has been reproduced on stained-glass windows, mosaics, tie tacs, pins, and in statues. A larger-than-life replica of the “Editorial Without Words” stands outside the International Shrine Headquarters building in Tampa. Photographer Randy Dieter presently serves as graphics editor for the Kentucky Post.

Thus, Shrine Masons found themselves able to provide additional services, and Shrine leaders began to look for other ways they could help the children of North America.

One result was the collating of the medical records of patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children. By placing the records of each patient and treatment on computer and microfilm, valuable information was made available to all Shrine surgeons and the medical world as a whole. This process, begun in 1959, also made it easier to initiate clinical research in Shrine orthopaedic hospitals.

Shriners Hospitals for Children had always engaged in clinical research, and in the early ’60s, the Shrine aggressively entered the structured research field and began earmarking funds for research projects. By 1967, Shrine Masons were spending $20,000 on orthopaedic research. Today, the annual research budget totals approximately $24 million. Shrine researchers are working on a vast variety of projects, including studies of bone and joint diseases, such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis; increasing basic knowledge of the structure and function of connective tissue; and refining functional electrical stimulation, which is enabling children with spinal cord injuries to have limited use of their arms and legs.

100 Million Dollar Club

For a one-time donation of $100, you can become a member of the “100 Million Dollar Club.” Donors will receive a special certificate recognizing their contribution.

Outright Gifts to Shriners Hospitals

To make a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children, you can send a check, made payable to “Shriners Hospitals for Children,” to any of the 22 Shriners Hospitals (see directory of individual hospitals) or to the Office of Development, International Shrine Headquarters, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607-1460.

If you wish to make a donation in honor of or in memory of another individual, simply include a note indicating the person’s name, and include the name and address of the person who should receive the acknowledgement.

Wills and Bequests

A bequest through your will ensures that the work of helping children in need through Shriners Hospitals for Children will be supported in your name after your death.
Designations of bequests should clearly indicate Shriners Hospitals for Children. Bequests under wills may reduce estate taxes.

Gifts of Securities

Gifts of securities are welcomed in our mission of helping children in need. All donations used to fund the operation of our 22 pediatric orthopaedic hospitals and burns institutes.

Gifts of appreciated securities may result in: 1) capital gains tax savings, 2) creating an income tax deduction, and 3) removing this asset from your estate for estate tax purposes. Gifts of appreciated securities have a potential federal income tax deduction of up to 30% of the adjusted gross income of the donor with a 5-year carry forward of any excess.

Gifts of Real Estate

Gifts of real estate are welcomed in our mission of helping children in need.

All qualified real estate may be deeded outright to Shriners Hospitals for Children, or if it is a residence or farm, may be given with a retained life interest. The value of the outright gift of property or the remainder interest being contributed to Shriners Hospitals may be deductible as a charitable contribution.

Life Estate Agreements

A personal residence or farm may be given as a charitable gift, with the donor retaining the right to use the property for life. This is known as a Life Estate Agreement. The life estate may be retained for one or more lives, or for a term of years.

Gifts of Life Insurance

Shriners Hospitals for Children can be designated as the irrevocable beneficiary and owner of an insurance policy. The hospitals would thus be assured of a definite sum in the future. The cash surrender value and annual premium may be deducted as a charitable contribution.

Pooled Income Fund

Persons contributing $5,000 or more may participate in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Pooled Income Fund. Under this agreement, donors or their designees will receive annual income from their contribution during their lifetime. A portion of the contribution may be deducted as a charitable donation.

Kerbela History

During the 1915 Imperial Council Session held in Seattle Washington, a group of Shriners belonging to Alhambra Temple and residing in the Knoxville area appeared before the Imperial Session requesting dispensation for a new Temple to be known as Kerbela and to be located in the city of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Prior to this time these Nobles traveled from Knoxville and other cities of Upper East Tennessee to Chattanooga for Shrine meetings, frequently by charter car on Southern Railway. Because of the distance involved it soon became apparent to these Nobles that they should have a Temple of their own.

The request presented in Seattle was granted. Dispensation to organize was approved on June 15, 1915. On the following July14,1915 the charter was approved.

There were 430 Charter Members, and the first election of officers was held on October 1, 1915. An elaborate program had been arranged for that day and Imperial Potentate J Putmn Stevens commissioned Past Imperial Potentate William B Melish to act as his special deputy at the constituting of Kerbela Temple and election of officers.

During the forenoon an informal reception for the visiting Nobles was held at the Hotel Imperial, and at noon Imperial William B Melish was the guest of honor at a luncheon held at the Cherokee Country Club. In the afternoon the members of Kerbela Temple were entertained at the Grand Theatre and by an open house held by the Knoxville Board of Commerce. At 6:30 pm the Nobility gathered to the number of more than eight hundred at the East Tennessee Building in Chilhowee Park where a barbeque dinner was served.

The ceremony of constituting the Temple under it’s charter was performed in Ancient Arabic form.

At 8:00 pm the first ceremonial session of Kerbela Temple was performed with a class of more than 20 members initiated as Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.Since that time Kerbela has prospered, and almost 60 years to the day Kerbela assisted in giving birth to Jericho Temple in Kingsport, Tennessee, when dispensation was granted to them at the Imperial Session in Toronto, Canada, on July 4, 1975.

Skyline of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, USA.The major event of the last decade occurred in 1982 when Knoxville hosted the Worlds Fair “Expo 82”. the Imperial Council decided to display Shrinedom to the world and place a booth in the Fair for the six months run. The booth was manned primarily by Nobles from Kerbela Temple and was visited by more than 1 million people.

There have been lean years and full years and today Kerbela Temple stands on the threshold of a bright future!

Since Shrinedom is the playground of Masonry, the members fully realize the great value of fellowship and hospitality. They not only have a desire to play, but they have proven they are interested in those children who come into this world with twisted limbs and who sustain serious burns. These children look to their Big Brothers for necessary treatments that they might walk and assume a useful place in society.

In other words the motto of Kerbela Temple is : “The Shrine Plays and Pays that Crippled and Burned Children May Walk and Live a Normal Life”.
